Graduate Admissions

Graduate Applications and Admissions

Application forms for admission and financial aid may be filled out directly via the Web (see below for link). Completed applications, including transcripts and GRE scores, should be submitted by midnight EST on January 15th for admission in August. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a firm background in physics, chemistry and mathematics is required for admission.

The Department of Geology and the UIUC Graduate College are committed to encouraging diversity among graduate students in Geology. The Department participates in the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation-supported University Center for Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM). Students who are eligible for Sloan fellowships are strongly encouraged to apply early (January 5th or earlier; this maximizes likelihood of success), and contact the department to express interest in the program.

Applicants can find information on applications and apply electronically at http://www.grad.illinois.edu/admissions/apply/.

The department is well positioned to provide full financial support to many of its graduate students! See THIS PAGE for financial aid details.

If your primary goal in our graduate program is obtaining an MS degree in the Teaching of Earth Sciences, you must complete an additional application for admission to the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education. This application can be obtained form the Graduate Admissions Secretary in the Dept. of Geology at the contact address just below. The application is due by January 15th for fall admission only. In this case, acceptance into the Graduate Program is conditional on admission to the College of Education. Information on admissionto the College of Education is available on their web page.
