INHS Discovers Amber Hoard

Posted on 08.23.2015

Sam Headsand Jared Thomas, at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) recently published a paper on a new type of fossil grasshopper. The paper is based on a hoard of Amber from the Dominican Republic only recently rediscovered at the Survey. It may turn out to be the largest amber insect collection from the Carribean in the world.

The new insect was named after Richard Attenborough, the noted naturalist and documentary maker. That led Attenborough to narrate a short documentary about the find by U of Illinois. The paper and documentary has gotten good press, appearing in Wired and other outlets. The short is available on Youtube.
