Wang-Ping Chen, Professor of Geophysics and Department Head, is scheduled to deliver the 2010 Francis Birch Lecture on December 15, 2010 at the Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union . The Lecture was established in 1992 to commemorate the legacy of Francis Birch (1903-1992), a founding-father of modern geophysics, who advanced the approach of combining seismic constraints with results from laboratory experiments under high pressure and temperature to decipher the interior of the Earth and other planets. The title of Chen's lecture is "Global Tectonics Ties Quakes, Rocks, and Volatiles in the Mantle Transition Zone". This lecture will be web-cast by the AGU.
