Acute Demand for U.S. Geoscientists Prompts Call for Higher Ed Action by GSA President.

An AGI study and subsequent GSA news release highlight the need for more Geoscientists and therefore change and/or expansion of geoscience teaching in higher education. Only about 1500 geoscience graduates move into professional work each year according to the AGI report.

The AGI workforce evaluation estimates that by 2021, some 150,000 to 220,000 geoscience jobs will need to be filled. The AGI report notes that at current graduation rates, most of these jobs will not be able to be filled by U.S. citizens.

CNBC has highlighted the need for geoscientists in the oil and gas industry by noting the high salaries available.
