Dylan Canavan (B.S., '98, M.S. '00) has been named Teacher of the Year by the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). Dylan has been teaching at Hinsdale Central High School in the Chicago area for 14 years. According to Lisa Fernandez, his Department Chairperson, "He is an integral member of the team of teachers that allows us to have one of the strongest Earth Science Programs in the state of Illinois... He is very gifted at teaching Earth Science curriculum to students who come to us with learning deficits in math, reading and/or science. Content is critical but helping these students to make gains in these other areas in addition to Earth Science content sets Dylan apart from other teachers. He also encourages his students to experience Earth Science in our community by hosting stargazing opportunities, taking students on field trips to the Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium and encouraging families to take trips to these and other museums or places like Starved Rock." For each of the last 12 years, Dylan has helped lead an “Earth Science Summer Field Trip” to Grand Canyon National Park or Yellowstone National Park for the students of Hinsdale Central. The department hopes to partner with Dylan and other teachers from around Illinois to increase the visibility of Geoscience in K-12 schools. Congratulations, Dylan!!!
